The Essential Doesn’t Change. Nothing To Be Done. (2020)
Edition of 5.Comprised of a pair of glass globes on lacquered bases, the edition revisits a recurrent form in our collaborative work – the form of a snow globe. In this latest iteration, the vessels are no longer filled with water but are instead filled with sand, a choice of materials that alters and transforms them to suggest hour glasses or astronomical instruments. The globes appear to hover over the surfaces they are placed on. Their roundness, color and contrast propose dependence and interdependence, a marriage of inversions greater than the sum of its parts.
While working on them, the globes became our constant companions in the studio, compatriots to the passing of time. As their presence grew they began personifying the characters Vladimir and Estragon on their quest for meaning in Irish writer Samuel Beckett’s existential play Waiting for Godot, from which the title comes. The Essential Doesn’t Change. Nothing To Be Done symbolizes for us the long hiatus from collective experiences that we all passed through during the COVID pandemic.
