50 Different Minds Installed

We installed #1/5 in the apartment of Robert Bielecki, who’s a philanthropist, angel investor, and cognoscente of poetry, new music and contemporary art.

50 Different Minds Installed

Robert wrote on his blog FastOrbit

I made the decision to acquire edition 1 of 5 the day I saw the inchoate artist proof a year ago. Conceptually it is completely original. 50 Different Minds is nine panels of sumptuous, saturated colors. It’s thought-provoking and meditative, deeply mindful of art history and decisively futurisitc, ironically repititious and non-repeating.

Perhaps the highest compliment I can offer is that 50 Different Minds is a visual corrollary to Morton Feldman’s composition Triadic Memories. Of that work he states:

“What Western musical forms have become is a paraphrase of memory. But memory could operate otherwise as well. In Triadic Memories, [...], there is a section of different types of chords where each chord is slowly repeated. One chord might be repeated three times, another, seven or eight - depending on how long I felt it should go on. Quite soon into a new chord I would forget the reiterated chord before it. I then reconstructed the entire section: rearranging its earlier progression and changing the number of times a particular chord was repeated. This way of working was a conscious attempt at “formalizing” a disorientation of memory. Chords are heard repeated without any discernible pattern. In this regularity (though there are slight gradations of tempo) there is a suggestion that what we hear is functional and directional, but soon realize that this is an illusion; a bit like walking the streets of Berlin - where all the buildings look alike, even if they’re not.”

2011 will be a big year for us. We have a number of artworks in progress.

• We’re continuing our work with ice sculptures and social commentary. The latest one, Morning In America, we presented at Jim Kempner Fine Art on June 18, 2011. It was a large sculpture of the words “middle class” and melted away in 8 hours.

• We have a new edition of snow globes that Artware Editions is publishing in the fall. These are 20 6-inch, snow globes of modern and contemporary art movements. They came out of a special project we did for the Noguchi Museum’s 2011 spring benefit.

• And we’re really excited to be continuing with the fiber optic tapestry, which we showed at Catherine Clark Gallery during ArtMRKT in San Francisco in May.

This year will be remembered not only for the uprisings in the Middle East, but also for the uprisings in the Midwest. Conservatives in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, and New Jersey are on the rampage - they’re attacking public sector employees and their unions - aiming to take away their pensions, their health insurance benefits, and their collective bargaining rights. Since when have public librarians, school teachers, firefighters, and police officers been responsible for the current economic decline? More.

This fall we are introducing a new edition of snow globes with Artware Editions. There will be 20 snow globes featuring our favorite art movements and schools, like Fluxus, Expressionism, Superflat and many more. The globes will be numbered and available singly or in groups. We will also be producing a lettered edition of 10 sets of the entire collection. Stay tuned.

For the past year, we’ve been perfecting a new media work, we call a fiber optic tapestry. This is a hand-woven fabric that displays patterns and colors derived from live information from the internet. Now we will make a series of these. The first one, 50 Diferent Minds is in an edition of 5, with 1 AP.

Our goal is to make 5 new woven new media pieces over the next 2 years. Future tapestries will take the form of woven maps to show the appearance and disappearance of information from around the world; woven portraits, using an individual’s internet reading and self-metrics to create a picture of them; and a disaster tapestry that overloads and ultimately fails. More.

Morning In America is the third ice sculpture/installation we’ve made. We like to work with this medium, because of the way the sculptures change over time. They have a strange sense of finality about them, as well as their theatrical/performative aspect. They disintegrate, and in the process distort time and space and create a third place.

A communal, social space. They’re accessible, people can actually approach them, almost enter them; and in fact, touch them. There is the need to connect with something tactile.

These sculptures’ strong, beautiful and physical presence are extremely ephemeral, elusive, even, fragile. Within hours, they totally disappear. Leaving the artifacts of the performance of the sculpture. Frozen moments or video remain. They transit through networks, enlarging the space - becoming social sculpture, expansive, exploring ideas, ideals in flux.

We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one? day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact.
America the Filthy Rich, this is disgusting. The middle class is all but extinct. It is not just the Senators and? Representatives in Washington, it is also at the state levels too. There has been more done to hurt the middle class and help the wealthy in states like Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan to name a few.

Everyone that has a Republican Senator and/or Representatives in Washington should contact them and tell them it is time to cuts all the loopholes to the top 5%. This is hurting all citizens, not just Democrats and independents but republicans as well.? Just because the republicans are divided and indecisive on the hill does not mean the citizens of or great nation needs to be.

@pthayer09 The point isn’t about them being wealthy. It’s about the few in who are siphoning money from other areas of society through politicians and not contributing a proportional amount to society. With loopholes heavily skewed to the richest? in the country they end up paying less as a percentage of their income than the vast majority.

The rich have a greater capacity to contribute than the middle class. Why is it fair to tax a teacher 25% of her income and a hedge fund manager only 5%?
Americans needs to tune in to what’s going on instead of watching mindless, pointless & FRUITLESS crap like DWTS & Idol and get involved with the political reality facing this country, the globe & our collective future!

Weaving Light - The Tapestry In The Digital Age chronicles the design, building and testing of 50 Different Minds, the first fiber optic tapestry made by Ligorano/Reese. This 40 page photo book documents the process and materials used during a span of 3 years, taking place in artist residencies at Montalvo Arts Center and Eyebeam Center for Art and Technology.

“Ultimately, the piece visually describes language, perpetuating the ancient tradition of textiles as text. Before written communication, the semiotic patterns and colors of textiles provided pivotal information about culture and social beliefs. In 50 Different Minds, Ligorano/Reese invert this idea by converting the actual words of a twenty-first-century phenomenon, Twitter, into textile designs.” - Susan Taber Avila, Fiber Arts magazine

We have made a new media art form called The Fiber Optic Tapestry. Fiber optic panels are woven on a handloom and attached to a custom made, computer controlled lighting system, which displays information from the internet onto the tapestry’s surface.

The tapestry parses information from Twitter and other data sources to display color, light and pattern onto woven fiber optic panels using RGB LEDs. The resulting real-time animation is an abstract, data visualization that continually updates as data changes.

“It’s like weaving information,” Ligorano says, adding, “We wanted to make a textile using contemporary communication materials and processes, to redefine the role of a tapestry in contemporary culture.”

Weaving epitomizes social interaction. Textiles have a shared history throughout the world’s cultures and are common throughout time. In European culture, medieval tapestries tell narratives, and in the 21st century, we find our stories threaded and networked throughout the web. The Fiber Optic Tapestry is an art form about networking, communication, and society.

The artists debuted the tapestry called 50 Different Minds at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles as part of the zer01 Festival in San Jose. The piece measures 50 by 50 inches. It displays patterns and colors that relate to Twitter Tweets of color words. It also uses air traffic data from the nine busiest airports in the U.S. Horizontal and vertical lines on the tapestry’s surface move in real- time, synchronized with the longitude and latitude of arriving and departing flights.

Visitors can also interact with the tapestry by tweeting additive and subtractive color names. The tapestry is programmed to display colors in response to tweets written using the expression #optictapestry and then color words.

Artists Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese have made a new media art form they call The Fiber Optic Tapestry.

“It’s like weaving information,” Marshall Reese says, “we wanted to make a textile using contemporary communication materials and processes, to redefine the role of a tapestry in contemporary culture.”

“Weaving epitomizes social interaction,” for Nora Ligorano, “Textiles have a shared history throughout the world’s cultures and are common throughout time. In European culture, medieval tapestries tell narratives, and in the 21st century, we find our stories threaded and networked throughout the web. The Fiber Optic Tapestry is an art form about networking, communication, and society.”

The artists are presenting a tapestry called 50 Different Minds at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles.
