Behind the Scenes
A candid look at what we’re up to, what we’re making, and what we’ve made.
Snow Globes
Making the F**K snow globe. Available at edgygifts.com.
We’re in production now, with a new set of snow globes coming out - Deadly Sins #1-7.
We’re offering a special lettered set (A-Z) of all seven sins; Greed is casted with gold leaf.
Of course, Sins are always available a la carte, just take your pick. They’re available from us through ligoranoreese.net and sold at the New Museum store.
Deadly Sins #1-7 is a hybrid project, using computer design with hand-cast resin sculptures. The casts are designed using illustrator, then we use a laser cutter to make the masters for the molds.
The first step is to adjust the laser cutter so that it is the proper distance from the material.
The laser cutter is a printer and prints the words by cutting them out of plastic, or paper, even out of metal.
The plastic we use is half-inch thick, and requires several passes to cut through it.
When the laser is finished we lift the plastic sheet off the bed of the cutter.
Then, we take out all the bits, so there’s negative space. The final step is taking the masters from the laser cutter and making silicon molds from them.
Then we hand-cast resin in them, here we’re demolding our favorite sins.
Each sin is a different color, carefully mixed, and has a different stylized typeface, like Lust, a fleshy, bulbous, looking letter.
Wrath, kind of a “Spy vs. Spy” look. (One of our favorite comic strips.)
One of those moments - worth more than 1,000 words…
The first of the new set - Greed. We can’t think of a better way to end ‘09 than by shaking it up with each one of the seven deadly sins.
“Snow Globes?” you may ask. Yes, snow globes.
We been making limited edition snow globes since 2001. We started out by producing John Ashcroft snow globes, which quickly sold out. All of our snow globes are hand-cast and hand-assembled by us in our studio.
In 2004, we began making editions of F**K snow globes on an ongoing basis. These snow globes are not really an open edition; they are actually based on a literary model of editions.
Now in their 7th edition, we have made over 300, which are signed and numbered.
Signing the edition of Untitled, 2001
Here we are signing the screenprint Untitled, 2001 at Brand X. We’re really interested in using and reusing imagery and forms, so something may start out in one form and morph into another.
Untitled, 2001 was also blown up to fill the window of Jim Kempner Fine Art on the anniversary of 9/11.
The Party’s Over Giftwrap
Our series Pure Products lets us play with lots of new forms, from nutrition kits and energy bars to wrapping paper. Nora talking with the production manager of Brita Litho during the printing of our gift wrap.
The paper was decorated with financial records from Enron, American Express bills of Abramoff, Tom DeLay, and federal indictments of Judith Miller and Scooter Libby.
Line Up on the streets
We started Line Up by selling it as a postcard book on the streets of NYC during the Republican National Convention in NYC in 2004. The response was awesome.
We sold hundreds, and went into national distribution, printing 3 editions, over 5,000 copies. Later it became a digital print limited edition.
It’s another example of how our work migrates from one form and format into another.
